Capturing the Historic Waters of the Karlovac Region

After diving into the moody, cliffside folklore of Slovenia and navigating the futuristic, glass-lined horizons of Dubai, our photographic journey brought us closer to home. We set our sights on the Karlovac region in Croatia—a stunning area famously defined by its lush landscapes and the intersection of four beautiful rivers.
The Fairy-Tale Castle Over the Water: "Munjara" in Ozalj
Just up the Kupa River from Karlovac lies a building that completely stops you in your tracks. At first glance, you would swear it is a medieval fairy-tale castle hidden in the woods.
In reality, this is the historic Ozalj Hydroelectric Power Plant (affectionately known by locals as "Munjara"), built in 1908 to power Karlovac’s first streetlights. Designed by the famous architect Hermann Bollé, its neo-Gothic, fortress-like look was actually inspired by a castle! Even cooler? The legendary Nikola Tesla himself advised on its location and construction.
The Low-Angle Riverbed Shot
Right at the water's edge, we used the mossy river rocks in the sharp foreground to lead your eyes across the clear water toward the blurry, dream-like silhouette of the power plant.
The Symmetric Grandeur

From a higher vantage point, the full scale of the building opens up. Framed beautifully by lush summer trees, the brilliant midday sun hits the stone facade while the deep, arched tunnels reflect dark, mysterious voids over the glistening river.
Guardians of the Valley: The Watchtower

Not far away, we explored the gritty, medieval ruins of the region’s defensive history.
Stepping back into black and white, we captured a towering stone watchtower standing guard over a winding road.
The harsh contrast between the bright afternoon sky and the deeply textured, shadowed stone work gives the impression of a timeless monolith that has spent centuries watching over the river valleys below.
