Postcard from Slovenia
Magic, Myth, and a Very Important Castle Guard

There is something deeply enchanting about Slovenia. It’s a country where Europe’s dramatic alpine peaks seamlessly meet old-world folklore, and every corner feels like a scene lifted straight out of a fantasy novel. On our recent trip, we set out to capture that exact mood—weaving through misty landscapes to find a couple of Slovenia's most captivating hidden treasures.
Here is a quick look into our journey through the lens.
The Fortress in the Cliff: Predjama Castle
Our main destination was the jaw-dropping Predjama Castle (Predjamski grad), a Renaissance fortress miraculously built right into the mouth of a massive cave. Looking at it, you can instantly feel the history and the sheer genius of medieval engineering.
To capture its moody, timeless essence, we experimented with two very different photographic styles:
The Drama of High-Contrast Monochrome
By stripping away the color, the jagged textures of the stone cliff and the dark, gaping void of the cave mouth take center stage. The castle almost looks like it grew out of the mountain itself.
The Moody Cinematic Grain

In full color, we leaned into the deep, dark tones of a moody European afternoon. The contrast between the stark white walls of the fortress and the imposing, shadowy cliffside creates an atmosphere thick with mystery.
Meeting the Local Legend
While the castle’s history is full of tales of the rebellious knight Erazem of Predjama, we encountered a much more relaxed resident guarding the drawbridge during our visit.
Tucked into a warm pocket of light against the cold stone walls sat this beautiful tabby cat. Looking entirely unbothered by the centuries of history around him, he gave us the perfect focal point—a splash of life and warmth against the ancient, textured backdrop of the castle grounds.
